He was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist, and orator.Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. The fundamental focus of Garveyism is the complete, total and never ending redemption of the continent of Africa by people of African ancestry, at home and abroad. Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL)to spread his message of Black Nationalism.
